Deposit:$50 Launching Out Into the Deep March 14-16, 2008 The Directed Retreat serves as a powerful tool for focusing ones attention on continually developing spiritual growth and realization. The Directed Retreat calls for silence, if not solitude. This allows the retreatant to grow in awareness of the inner depths of self and the workings of Gods Love. The second important element in a directed retreat is the presence and assistance of a companion. This person helps to hold up a mirror for the retreatant, to reflect back what has been said and heard. The third important element is scripture, and especially the gospels. These serve as a window into the heart of God. The Directed Retreat can be a great gift. If youve never made one, give it a try, and you will probably be happy you did. Bethany is a great place for such a retreat experience. Give us a call! Your silence, your director, and some special scriptures are awaiting you! Jesus invites us to launch out into the deep. If you have had an experience with directed retreats, this weekend would also be appropriate for you. The Retreat Directors are Sr. Doris Bissonnette, RJM, Sr. Stella Herrera, RJM, Sr. Catherine McIntyre, RJM, and Sr. Patricia Reid, OSF. Direction in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Rev. Ned Coughin, SJ, will preside at Eucharistic Liturgy on Saturday evening. Arrive in time for dinner at 5:30pm on Friday, and opening session at 7:00pm. Easter Triduum Retreat

June 16-22, 2008 Sr. Carolyn Gorny-Kopkowski, OSB, will direct this retreat, based on Twelve Steps to Inner Freedom: Humility Revisited, by Sr. Joan Chittister, OSB The 21st century has much to re-learn about humility, and the Rule of Benedict may be its best model. Benedict identifies 12 steps, or degrees, of humility, 12 levels of personal growth, that lead to inner peace, to the achievement of a state of mind that enables us to live a truly human life. Sr. Joan writes in chapter 1, entitled, A Changing World: Perhaps the things we have acquired have become blinders on our souls, jangle in our minds, confusion in our hearts. What we have really lost is the sense of who we are and where we belong in the universe and what that means for everything we do. Bethany is happy to have Sr. Carolyn Gorny-Kopkowski, OSB, long-time associate and friend of Sr. Joan Chittister, OSB, with us as retreat director for the first time. She has been recommended by other retreat centers that have experienced her retreats based on Sr. Joans works. Arrive between 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm on Monday, dinner at 5:30 pm, first session at 7:00 pm. Depart after 12:00 noon lunch on Sunday. There will be time for both silence and interaction. July 1-9 July 12-20 July 23-31 A directed retreat provides time for prayer, solitude, and daily guidance from a personal director trained in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. In addition to individualized scheduling throughout the year, Bethany offers three eight-day directed retreats during the summer season: July 1-9, 12-20, 23-31, 2008 Arrangements can be made for a six-day or seven-day directed retreat beginning on the same dates, namely, July 1, July 12, and July 23. Offering: 8-Day: $490. 7-Day: $440. 6-Day: $390 Weekend Retreat with Margaret Silf September 26-28, 2008 The weekend retreat will give participants an opportunity to explore their own story in the broad context of Ignatian spirituality. It will offer a flavor of the story of Ignatius of Loyola in a way that engages the imagination and invites reflection on participants' own experiences. The story, whether personal or universal, includes the shattering of dreams, the discovery of how moods and feelings can reveal God's movement within our hearts, our experience of both spriritual heights of "peak experiences" and the depths of despair, leading to a deeper understanding of spiritual consolation and desolation. We will reflect on the challenge to relinquish all that is not leading to God, and our commitment to follow closely in the steps of Jesus. Participants will also take notice of their visionary moments and reflect on how they desire to live by them and respond to them. No prior knowledge of Ignatian spirituality is required. The retreat will "tell the story". Arrive on Friday for dinner at 5:30 pm, opening session at 7:00 pm. Depart on Sunday after 12:00 noon lunch. Offering: Bethany: $175, Tuition: $45, Total: $220 Or stay for the following retreat, at no additional cost for overnight stay on Sunday. Weekday Retreat with Margaret Silf September 29 - October 3, 2008 Participants will explore some of the most important aspects of Ignatian spirituality, based on their own experience and in the light of the experience of its founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola. This retreat will lead participants to reflect on: our own dreams, desires, times of despair, the art of discernment, and the importance of discovering. This retreat is free-standing and requires no prior knowledge of the story of Ignatius or Ignatian spirituality. However, those who are already very familiar with Ignatian spirituality should find new directions and approaches during the week, and anyone able to join us for the preceding weekend retreat on Ignatius' story would find this helpful. Arrive on Monday for dinner at 5:30 pm, opening session at 7:00 pm. Depart on Friday after 12:00 noon lunch. Offering: Bethany: $260, Tuition: $70, Total: $330 Or combine with the preceding retreat, at no additional cost for overnight stay on Sunday.
